At approximately 5:15 pm, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office was notified of a motorcycle verses automobile crash on US Highway 63 near 830th Street in Trenton Township.
On Saturday August 19th, 2023 at approximately 5:15 pm, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a motorcycle verses automobile crash on US Highway 63 near 830th Street in Trenton Township.
It was determined that a 2004 Harley Davidson operated by a Michael Cardell, 58 years old from Red Wing, MN had been traveling northbound on US Highway 63 when traffic began to slow in front of him. Mr. Cardell then entered the southbound lane and struck a 2015 Chevy Equinox being operated by a Jade Helsper, 35 years old from Red Wing, MN. Mr. Helsper had a passenger in his vehicle who was identified as Alicia Doane, 34 years old from Red Wing, MN.
Mr. Cardell was thrown from his motorcycle and pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. Mr. Helsper was not injured in the accident and Ms. Doane was transported by the Red Wing Fire Department to Mayo Hospital in Red Wing, MN with undetermined injuries.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Red Wing Police Department, Ellsworth Fire Department, and the Red Wing Fire Department. The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the traveling public for their patience while the scene was investigated, as well as the Pierce County Highway Department who responded to assist with traffic management by providing barricades and personal during the incident.
