Nutrition Programs

A variety of services are provided through the Nutrition Program, including home delivered meals and Senior Dining. The Nutrition Program promotes good health behaviors through nutrition screenings, education, counseling and intervention. 

Programs are funded under the federal Older Americans Act and are designed to provide meals and supportive services to people 60 years of age and older and their spouses regardless of age. Younger people with a disability may also qualify.

Meals comply with the Dietary Guidelines For Americans and Myplate (chooesemyplate.gov) provide at least one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances for an older person. The purpose of the program is to provide nutrition services that assist older individuals to live independently with improved nutrition.

Home Delivered Meals:  The Home Delivered Meals program provides a hot nutritious meal to persons who are:  aged 60 and over, are unable to prepare adequate meals on their own, and are temporarily or permanently homebound. Persons are referred by social workers, public health nurses, doctors, family members, friends or self.  Meals are provided on a short or long term basis. Short term meals are typically provided for those recovering from surgery or illness.

Senior Dining Services: The nutrition program provides a nutritionally balanced hot meal and a place to socialize.  There are locations throughout Pierce County.  We are funded by Federal and State funds along with individual donations.   The nutrition sites are open to persons 60 and older and their spouse, regardless of age.  The suggested donation is $6.00 a meal.  You must register one day prior to eating at all of the meal sites EXCEPT Spring Valley.
