The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Plan)

The Federal government recently passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in an effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save millions of jobs, and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century.  Pierce County is taking an active role in the recovery.  The County will be applying for grants and other funding which it believes will provide benefits for the community.  There are also numerous opportunities for local government, businesses and individuals.  The County will also help all interested parties in locating information about financial resources and other assistance provided through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

There are 12 categories of the funding programs; most of the funds are being made available through existing federal, state, and local programs.  The Pierce County Economic Development Corporation has developed a stimulus program matrix to assist in the program search.   The columns of this table include the name of the program and the federal agency involved,  followed by boxes to indicate  who the  program user(s) might be, whether the program is organized as a loan/grant/contract/tax incentive etc., whether it comes directly from the federal agency or flows through the state, and who the suggested state level contact is.

The Census Bureau is hiring hundreds of thousands of temporary workers that will be needed to fill a variety of census positions across the country. Broadband Access and Availability - There are many funding opportunities within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for broadband (high-speed internet) in rural areas.  The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin has developed a survey intended to assess where broadband needs improvement and areas where needs are not being met.  Response to the survey may be valuable if the County chooses to apply for these programs.
