Everyone Has The Right To Breathe Clean Air:

 

Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilation systems are NOT effective against secondhand smoke according to the Surgeon General

 

Protecting our right to breathe clean air is a health and safety issue and should be no more optional than ensuring our food, water and public facilities are safe

 

Everyone has the right to health: Diseases caused by SHS: Stroke, heart disease, cancer, asthma, miscarriages & low birth weight, SIDS & pneumonia

Secondhand Smoke Kills:

 

Smoking kills 400,000 people each year

 

Every year secondhand smoke kills 53,000 Americans in the US, including 3,000 adult non-smokers in Wisconsin

 

Secondhand smoke is the 3rd leading cause of preventable deaths in the US

 

Secondhand smoke contains 4,000 hazardous chemicals, including 43 carcinogenic chemicals

 

The gas phase of secondhand smoke contains poisons, such as: carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and ammonia.


Smoke-Free Policies:

 

76% of the adult population in WI do not smoke.

 

More than 90% of American’s favor banning
smoking in public places

 

Smoke-free policies are the least expensive

change for businesses to implement and

enforce

 

A local UW-Madison study found restaurant
sales increased 24% after going smoke-free

 

More than 34 WI communities are currently smoke free.

 

The WI Smoke Free Act was passed in May of 2009 - effective July 5, 2010
