Snowmobile Safety

Each year the Safety Patrol teaches a snowmobile safety class. The snowmobile safety classes are aimed toward younger or beginning snowmobile operators however anyone is welcome to take the course and each year several adult snowmobilers or parents of students opt to take the course, some adults say they receive reduced rates on their snowmobile insurance if they complete the class! Persons age 12 to 16, or anyone born on or after January 1, 1985 must have completed the course if they operate a snowmobile without an adult supervisor on the snowmobile with them.

The snowmobile safety course covers several topics including snowmobile history, rules and regulations, recommended snowmobile clothing, basic snowmobile maintenance, and handling accidents and emergencies on the trail. The safety course consists of a total of ten classroom hours. Usually the class is spread over five meeting dates each with two hours of class time. In addition to the class time a separate test date is set during which students must complete a written test and must also operate a snowmobile through a simple practical course to assure that they are physically able to control a snowmobile. The cost of the class is $10.00 per student.
